Some were introduced by accident, while others, such as those in Kane'ohe Bay, were brought in intentionally during the 1970s to launch a new industry to Hawaii: manufacturing carageenen and agar, commercial products used as thickeners in the food and cosmetic industries.

"In January we will receive a grant from the Hawaii Coral Reef Initiative to try to determine if eradication of some of these seaweeds is possible, and if so, to develop the appropriate methods to effectively remove them."
