Invasive Algae Threatens Hawaiian Corals

Bio Clean Fuel Three species of nonnative algae have invaded Hawaii's of Kane'ohe Bay and now threaten the survival of the bay's coral reefs.

Earth Bio Fuel There are now five known introduced species of seaweed and at least two native species of seaweed causing problems on Hawaii's reefs. Some were introduced by accident, while others, such as those in Kane'ohe Bay, were brought in intentionally during the 1970s to launch a new industry to Hawaii: manufacturing carageenen and agar, commercial products used as thickeners in the food and cosmetic industries.

Yes, ULSD fuels have a lower BTU value and thus when burned in a diesel engine will result in less power. Cetane enhanced products can offset this power loss. Cetane is a high energy compound that makes the fuel burn more completely in the combustion chamber, resulting in more power, reduced emissions, and improved fuel economy. Power Service diesel additives contain "+ Cetane Boost" to offset this power loss while also improving fuel economy and reducing emissions.

Bio Flight Fuel Green Jb100 "Thirty years later many of these species are found throughout the state and competing with local marine plants and animals," said Jennifer Smith, a PhD candidate and research scientist at the University of Hawaii Department of Botany.

ULSD was mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to be sold at all retail pumps by October of 2006. This new fuel is a reduced sulfur content formula of diesel fuel. Sulfur content went from 50 parts per million (ppm) to 15 ppm in this new fuel. The reduction of sulfur is mandated to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions 2. Do new diesel engines require use of ULSD

Bio Bio Fuel Less More Waste "Because Hawaii's native fish species don't appear to be eating some of them, they can grow without any real control on their abundance," Smith added. "The seaweeds are covering large portions of shallow reef environments. Some of them may be out competing and covering the coral. This all took place before people knew the impact that moving species around can have on an environment."

Rejection from your dream school can give you a whole new perspective on life, as FastWeb's student columnist discovered.

Make Bio Fuel Since the mid 1970s, the three introduced species of algae have taken over many acres of Kane'ohe Bay. Throughout the state, introduced and invasive seaweeds are threatening the health of the reef ecosystems, as well as Hawaii's environment and visitor industry.

Lubricity additives will not be added at the refinery to replace the reduced sulfur content. Some diesel fuel additives do contain lubricity additives. Advance Auto Parts carries Power Service brand diesel additives that contain a proprietary lubricity additive called "Slickdiesel", for maximum fuel lubrication. 5. Customer notices their diesel engine has lost power since the introduction of ULSD. Is this a result of the new fuels

Bio Fuel Jb100 Jet Properties "Hawaii's coral reefs may be more impacted by introduced species than any other tropical region in the world," said Smith. "In some places when you lift up the seaweed there is dead coral underneath. This could indicate a cause and effect. Kane'ohe Bay has been impacted by so many alien algae that I've heard tour operators believe the reefs have changed dramatically."

Fuel Cell Bio The abundance of algae in the bay may be the result of a combination of factors including overfishing, nutrient inputs from fertilizers, sewage and runoff, sedimentation and the unique growth forms that these alien species take on.

Bio Conversion Fuel "It is important to study the dynamics of these extensive blooms so as to offer advice to land managers on how to reduce the scale of these problems," said Smith. "In January we will receive a grant from the Hawaii Coral Reef Initiative to try to determine if eradication of some of these seaweeds is possible, and if so, to develop the appropriate methods to effectively remove them."
